There is no denying the fact that he was an efficient
administrator and principled personality. To say merely on the strength of
accession of 562 the then (1947-))existing Indian Princely states by him is
false and without historicity. Modi and many others were again wrong when they
stated that it was Patel who unified those states. He was neither defense
Minister nor chief of the army that he ordered invasion of those states. Invasion
was neither needed nor called for.
Before the partition
of India in 1947,562 princely states existed in India which were not part of
British India. These were the parts of the Indian subcontinent which had not
been conquered and annexed by British but were subject to subsidiary alliances. Things moved quickly after the partition of
British India in 1947.By the end of 1949 all of the states except
Sikkim had chosen to accede to one of the
states of India or Pakistan or else had been conquered and annexed. For
a short time some of the rulers explored the possibility of a federation of
these state separate from either but this came to nothing. Most of the states then
decided to accede to India or to Pakistan while others which held out for
maintaining independent were later invaded by India such as Junagarh(1947-19480,Hyderabad
on 18th September1948,Bilaspuron 12 October 1948,and Bhopal on 1st
May 1949.Travancore also chose to remain Independent. In Jammu and Kashmir, a state with Muslim Majority but
Hindu Ruler ,the Maharaja hoped to remain independent but acceded to India on
27 October 1947.The last remaining independent state Sikkim was
incorporated in India on 16th
May 1975.The figure oft quoted by Modi and his company is 562.This number
includes princely states acceded in to Pakistan also. Exact figure shall be
given soon.
